Our Work with Mary Velez and the Matt Velez Fund
Matt Velez was a young energetic young man who had a heart issue since birth. He had undergone various surgeries and treatments and was doing well in handling his heart issue. In 2001, at the age of 17, he suffered a Sudden Cardiac Arrest while playing basketball at a gym. CPR was quickly started and 9-1-1 notified with paramedics responding. Although the paramedics were able to get his heart restarted, he never regained consciousness.
His mother Mary Velez, a registered nurse at Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling WV, later found out that he would have survived had an AED been available. She soon created the Matt Velez Save A Life Fund to help fund the placement of AEDs in the region is schools, churches and other public places.
I met Mary through my wife, Staci, who also works at the hospital. When Mary found out we were providing AEDs at such low prices, she helped get our name out in the area to businesses and groups looking to purchase an AED.
In 2012, I experienced cardiac problems, with tests finding a rare heart defect that had been present since birth and gone undetected for 48 years. This rare defect was repaired at The Cleveland Clinic, who invented the surgery to repair this defect and were the leading facility, of the two in the nation, for the repair. I was only the 20th person this surgery was ever performed on at The Cleveland Clinic during the 6 years they have been doing this surgery .
Thankful for being given such a blessing, we have committed our company to work to get more AEDs out into the community. We are working with Ms. Velez and donating $50.00 for every AED we sell to the Matt Velez Save A Life Fund.
Pictured below is a presentation of a financial donation made to Ms. Velez for the Matt Velez Save A Life Fund for recent sales of AEDs as well as a donation of a Training AED unit for her to use during her presentations and teaching. We are honored to help assist her with helping to save lives in our region and look forward to our continued partnership.

What is an AED?
An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a lightweight, portable device that delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart. The shock can stop an irregular rhythm and allow a normal rhythm to resume in a heart in sudden cardiac arrest. Sudden cardiac arrest is an abrupt loss of heart function. If it’s not treated within minutes, it quickly leads to death. Most sudden cardiac arrests result from ventricular fibrillation. This is a rapid and unsynchronized heart rhythm starting in the heart’s lower pumping chambers (the ventricles). The heart must be “defibrillated” quickly, because a victim’s chance of surviving drops by 7 to 10 percent for every minute a normal heartbeat is not restored.
Why are AEDs important?
AEDs make it possible for more people to respond to a medical emergency where defibrillation is required. Because AEDs are portable, they can be used by nonmedical people. They can be made part of emergency response programs that also include rapid use of 9-1-1 and prompt delivery of cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). All three of these activities are vital to improving survival from cardiac arrest.
How does an AED work?
A built-in computer checks a victim’s heart rhythm through adhesive electrodes. The computer calculates whether defibrillation is needed. If it is, a recorded voice tells the rescuer to press the shock button on the AED. This shock momentarily stuns the heart and stops all activity. It gives the heart the chance to resume beating effectively. Instructions guide the user through the process. AEDs advise a shock only for ventricular fibrillation or another life-threatening condition called pulseless ventricular tachycardia.
Who can use an AED?
Non-medical personnel such as police, fire service personnel, flight attendants, security guards and other lay rescuers who have been properly trained can use AEDs.
Are AEDs safe to use?
AEDs are safe to use by anyone who’s been trained to operate them. Studies have shown that 90 percent of the time AEDs are able to detect a rhythm that should be defibrillated. And 95 percent of the time they are able to recommend NOT shocking when the computer shows
defibrillation is not indicated.

The HeartStart FR2+ offers features that make hand-off to ALS professionals seamless for maximum continuity of care for the patient.
An optional ECG display is available. The FR2+ can be configured to allow ALS responders to switch to a manual mode, giving them more decision-making control. Defibrillator pad adapters enable the pads to remain on the patient when transferring to many popular ALS manual defibrillators from Philips and other manufacturers.
But don't be misled by its advanced capabilities.
The HeartStart FR2+ is extremely easy to use. Its design is based on years of research, refinement by Philips human factors experts and user testing with the full range of responders from healthcare professionals to lay people. SMART Technology, only from Philips
At the core of all HeartStart Defibrillators is SMART Biphasic technology. The HeartStart FRx Defibrillator's biphasic waveform delivers a highly effective defibrillation shock that is also gentle to the heart. No other external defibrillation therapy has been supported by more published clinical data.SMART Analysis, a proven Philips technology for heart rhythm assessment, ensures that the FRx Defibrillator only shocks when it should. SMART Analysis automatically assesses the victim's heart rhythm and is designed not to deliver a shock unless the rhythm is determined to be shockable - even if the shock button is pressed. What's more, SMART Pads II enable the FRx to keep pace with the responder by adjusting to their actions.Designed for real world use. The Philips HeartStart FRx Defibrillator is exceptionally rugged. Designed to surpass rigorous testing requirements, the FRx withstands jetting water, loads up to 500 pounds and a one-meter drop onto concrete.
Built on a platform of proven ease-of-use
The HeartStart FRx Defibrillator was designed to be as easy as the HeartStart OnSite Defibrillator and shares many of its features, including CPR Coaching and intuitive icon-driven operation. Although small and lightweight - just 3.5 pounds - the FRx is equipped to guide you through the resuscitation of a SCA victim. The HeartStart FRx guides you through every step with clear, calm voice commands and descriptive visual icons. The FRx even reminds you to call emergency medical services (EMS). Pressing the blue i-button activates HeartStart CPR Coaching for assistance with CPR. The flashing icons and the Quick Reference Guide can be used to lead you through the defibrillation steps - even in situations where hearing voice instructions is a challenge.Once EMS arrives, hand-off is fast and easy because the FRx is compatible with advanced defibrillators like the HeartStart MRx. With HeartStart adapters, pads can be plugged into devices from other manufacturers to ensure continuity of care.Providing a complete, reliable solution.
Reliability backed by Philips
The HeartStart FRx Defibrillator is powered by an easy to install, long-life (four-year) battery, so you know the device is charged and ready. The device's automated daily, weekly and monthly self-tests check the pads readiness, and verify functionality and calibration of circuits and systems. With over 85 tests, the FRx is one of the most comprehensive self-testing devices on the market and is virtually maintenance-free. The blinking green "Ready" light on the defibrillator is your assurance that the device is ready for use.
The Philips HeartStart FRx Defibrillator is designed to be easy to use, rugged, and reliable for those who get there first. On the scene with law enforcement, on the field with student athletes or on the job with employees, the FRx Defibrillator is the solution for treating Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) from ventricular fibrillation in environments and conditions too demanding for many other defibrillators.
The HeartStart FRx Defibrillator carries innovation in its genes. Building on the successes of the other members of the HeartStart family of defibrillators, the FRx brings innovations to the treatment of SCA SMART Technology, only from Philips.
