Our Work with Mary Velez and the Matt Velez Fund

Matt Velez was a young energetic young man who had a heart issue since birth. He had undergone various surgeries and treatments and was doing well in handling his heart issue. In 2001, at the age of 17, he suffered a Sudden Cardiac Arrest while playing basketball at a gym. CPR was quickly started and 9-1-1 notified with paramedics responding. Although the paramedics were able to get his heart restarted, he never regained consciousness.

His mother Mary Velez, a registered nurse at Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling WV, later found out that he would have survived had an AED been available. She soon created the Matt Velez Save A Life Fund to help fund the placement of AEDs in the region is schools, churches and other public places.

I met Mary through my wife, Staci, who also works at the hospital. When Mary found out we were providing AEDs at such low prices, she helped get our name out in the area to businesses and groups looking to purchase an AED.

In 2012, I experienced cardiac problems, with tests finding a rare heart defect that had been present since birth and gone undetected for 48 years. This rare defect was repaired at The Cleveland Clinic, who invented the surgery to repair this defect and were the leading facility, of the two in the nation, for the repair. I was only the 20th person this surgery was ever performed on at The Cleveland Clinic during the 6 years they have been doing this surgery .

Thankful for being given such a blessing, we have committed our company to work to get more AEDs out into the community. We are working with Ms. Velez and donating $50.00 for every AED we sell to the Matt Velez Save A Life Fund

Pictured below is a presentation of a financial donation made to Ms. Velez for the Matt Velez Save A Life Fund for recent sales of AEDs as well as a donation of a Training AED unit for her to use during her presentations and teaching. We are honored to help assist her with helping to save lives in our region and look forward to our continued partnership.

What is an AED?

An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a lightweight, portable device that delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart. The shock can stop an irregular rhythm and allow a normal rhythm to resume in a heart in sudden cardiac arrest. Sudden cardiac arrest is an abrupt loss of heart function. If it’s not treated within minutes, it quickly leads to death. Most sudden cardiac arrests result from ventricular fibrillation. This is a rapid and unsynchronized heart rhythm starting in the heart’s lower pumping chambers (the ventricles). The heart must be “defibrillated” quickly, because a victim’s chance of surviving drops by 7 to 10 percent for every minute a normal heartbeat is not restored.

Why are AEDs important?

AEDs make it possible for more people to respond to a medical emergency where defibrillation is required. Because AEDs are portable, they can be used by nonmedical people. They can be made part of emergency response programs that also include rapid use of 9-1-1 and prompt delivery of cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). All three of these activities are vital to improving survival from cardiac arrest.

How does an AED work?

A built-in computer checks a victim’s heart rhythm through adhesive electrodes. The computer calculates whether defibrillation is needed. If it is, a recorded voice tells the rescuer to press the shock button on the AED. This shock momentarily stuns the heart and stops all activity. It gives the heart the chance to resume beating effectively. Instructions guide the user through the process. AEDs advise a shock only for ventricular fibrillation or another life-threatening condition called pulseless ventricular tachycardia.

Who can use an AED?

Non-medical personnel such as police, fire service personnel, flight attendants, security guards and other lay rescuers who have been properly trained can use AEDs.

Are AEDs safe to use?

AEDs are safe to use by anyone who’s been trained to operate them. Studies have shown that 90 percent of the time AEDs are able to detect a rhythm that should be defibrillated. And 95 percent of the time they are able to recommend NOT shocking when the computer shows

defibrillation is not indicated.

We strive to provide your company or organization with top of the line Philips AEDs at unbeatable pricing and service. We not only provide you with the AED, we will also train your staff in how to respond in an emergency situation. Philips is the brand we use to protect our employees and our families.

And if your group already has another brand AED, we can supply your needed pads and batteries at a savings.

The HeartStart FR2+ offers features that make hand-off to ALS  professionals seamless for maximum continuity of care for the patient.

An optional ECG display is available. The FR2+ can be configured to allow ALS responders to switch to a manual mode, giving them more decision-making control. Defibrillator pad adapters enable the pads to remain on the patient when transferring to many popular ALS manual defibrillators from Philips and other manufacturers.

But don't be misled by its advanced capabilities

The HeartStart FR2+ is extremely easy to use. Its design is based on years of research, refinement by Philips human factors experts and user testing with the full range of responders from healthcare professionals to lay people. In fact, hundreds of thousands of citizens are already trained and ready to save a life with the FR2+.

Optimized for challenging environments.

Because of its ruggedness and ability to stand up to temperature extremes and wet conditions, the HeartStart FR2+ is the right choice for harsh,
outdoor, or mobile use. It combines natural sounding voice instructions that are loud and clear, with text prompts on a large, bright back-lit display. This
makes it ideal if you anticipate its use in noisy or poorly lit settings. And at just 4.7 pounds, it's incredibly small and light-weight so it won't weigh
you down.

Infant/Child Defibrillation.

The FR2+ can treat patients of any age. When equipped with special infant/child defibrillator pads that reduce the energy of the FR2+'s shock, you
can safely treat a child or infant in cardiac arrest.

Tool of the pros; simplicity for the lay responder.
The FR2+ has come to be a trusted tool of professional responders and designated response teams in the work place and public settings. Its clean, uncluttered design is optimized for fast, efficient operation and rapid delivery of life-saving therapy. Commands are clear, streamlined, confident, and concise: ideal for responders who are trained, drilled, and ready to save a life now.
